"A great afternoon out and fantastic value for money"

Beyond the Parks
Airboats, rockets, manatees and more, sorted by age.
Choose by Family
The same outing can be the highlight of a teenager's trip and a meltdown for a three-year-old. Here is where each age group usually does best.
Peppa Pig Theme Park is built for ages 2 to 5, SEA LIFE Orlando keeps everyone indoors, and Gatorland is 15 to 20 minutes from the Disney area with a splash park and petting farm.
The age when an airboat ride, a gator show and the Kennedy Space Center rocket garden all land. Planet Play at the space center is designed for ages 2 to 12.
Snorkeling alongside manatees in Crystal River, the Gatorland zip line over the gator pools, a flashlight tour after dark, or the astronaut training simulators at Kennedy Space Center (ages 10 and up).
A manatee viewing cruise, the air-conditioned coaches of the Kennedy Space Center bus tour, and a day trip with hotel pickup all keep walking and heat to a minimum.

Top Family Experiences
One pick per kind of day out, each with its own breakdown of ages, timing and what is included.
MOST REVIEWEDAn airboat ride through the marshes around Lake Cypress plus entry to Wild Florida's gator and animal park. A good half-day for families with a car and kids of any age who can handle noise.
15–20 MIN FROM DISNEYA full-day, skip-the-line entry ticket to Gatorland, the 110-acre alligator park between Orlando and Kissimmee, with shows, a petting zoo and a splash area. Great for all ages, toddlers included.
AIRBOAT · 1–1.5 HRA small-boat airboat tour from a Kissimmee dock into the marshes of Lake Toho and Shingle Creek, 1 or 1.5 hours. Good for families who want a quieter, more personal boat close to the parks.
HOTEL PICKUPA full day from your Orlando hotel: a morning snorkel with wild manatees in Crystal River, then Homosassa Springs wildlife park. Best for confident swimmers aged about 8 and up.
AGES 2–12One-day LEGOLAND Florida ticket with SEA LIFE Florida included, plus options that add the water park or Peppa Pig Theme Park. Built for kids about 2 to 12.
INDOORSEntry to SEA LIFE Orlando at ICON Park on I-Drive, with a 360-degree shark tunnel and a touch pool. An easy indoor hour or so for toddlers through tweens.
LOWEST PRICEA one-day entry ticket to Wild Florida's walk-through animal park near Kenansville, with a live gator demonstration. Suits families with young kids who want animals without the airboat noise.
NO CAR NEEDEDA 10-hour Kennedy Space Center day from Orlando, with options from transport only to a small-group tour with admission. A good fit for space-mad kids about 5 and up whose parents would rather not drive.
Our Top Family Pick
Wild Florida's airboat ride plus its wildlife park: short enough for preschoolers, wild enough for teens, and under an hour from the Disney area.
Beyond the Theme Parks
Six kinds of day out that give kids something the parks cannot, each with its own page of options, ages and logistics.
Kissimmee's lakes and Shingle Creek feed the Everglades system, which is why the local rides carry the name. Gators, wading birds and a fast, loud ride, a short drive from the Disney area.
Gatorland is the close, easy half day with shows, a splash park and a zip line. Wild Florida adds a drive-through safari in your own car and its own airboats.
About 50 miles east. The bus tour to the Saturn V is included with admission, Planet Play keeps under-12s busy, and the Shuttle Launch Experience needs 44 inches.
Winter brings manatees into the warm springs. Swim in Crystal River, walk the Blue Spring boardwalk, or paddle the Silver River past the monkeys.
SEA LIFE's 360-degree tunnel, WonderWorks' ropes course and laser tag, the Museum of Illusions and indoor skydiving at iFLY from age 3.
St. Augustine's fort (free for kids 15 and under), Clearwater Beach, LEGOLAND in Winter Haven, and hotel-pickup trips that spare you the driving.

What's Best Right Now
Cooler, drier months change what makes sense. Here is what each part of the season is good for.
Average highs drop to about 85°F and the dry season usually starts in mid-October. LEGOLAND's Brick or Treat runs on select dates through November 1, included with admission.
Crystal River's manatee season runs November 15 to March 31. Blue Spring closes its spring run to swimmers and paddlers so the animals can gather, and the boardwalk becomes the show.
November averages under 2 inches of rain, which makes it a strong month for airboats and animal parks. Kennedy Space Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 26.
St. Augustine's Nights of Lights runs November 21, 2026 to January 18, 2027. Pack layers: January mornings average around 50°F, colder after a manatee swim.
Four very different days out, side by side on the things parents actually decide on.

How a Good Day Actually Runs
Most Orlando family days go wrong in the early afternoon, not at the gate. Florida's heat and summer storms build after lunch, animals go quiet in the midday sun, and small children run out of patience at the same hour. The families who come home happy tend to do the outdoor part first and save the air-conditioning for later.

Planning Notes
Drive times, ages, heat and money: the four things that decide whether a day out works.
A theme-park ticket buys the rides. It does not buy the moment a six-year-old spots a gator’s eyes above the waterline from an airboat, or stands under the Saturn V, or watches a manatee drift past close enough to see its whiskers. Those are the days families still talk about years later, and most of them sit within an hour or two of the hotel. This site compares them for parents, starting from the youngest traveler rather than from the brochure.
Orlando’s family activities fall into three rings. The inner ring is close to the Disney and Kissimmee hotels (our guide to where to stay with kids compares them): Gatorland is 15 to 20 minutes away, and the Kissimmee airboat rides leave from the lakes a short drive south. The middle ring is roughly 45 minutes to an hour: LEGOLAND Florida in Winter Haven, Wild Florida on Lake Cypress (about 34 miles from Disney), and Blue Spring State Park to the north. The outer ring is a proper day trip: Kennedy Space Center is about 50 miles east, Crystal River about 85 miles northwest, and St. Augustine and Clearwater Beach closer to two hours.
The inner ring works as a half day with a nap in the middle. The outer ring works best as the only plan for that day, and on listings that include hotel pickup, as our family day trips from Orlando page sets out.
Ages decide more than prices do, and our complete guide to things to do in Orlando with kids sets the theme parks and the days beyond them side by side, or our Orlando theme parks compared guide weighs the ten parks against each other. When you’re ready to buy, our Orlando theme park tickets guide shows where each ticket is cheapest, and the best water parks in Orlando guide says which water parks are open on your dates. Peppa Pig Theme Park is aimed at ages 2 to 5, LEGOLAND Florida at 2 to 12, and Kennedy Space Center’s Planet Play at 2 to 12 as well. At the other end, the astronaut training simulators at Kennedy are for ages 10 and up, and the Gatorland zip line has no minimum age but needs riders at least 37 inches tall. Crystal River’s group swim tours generally take children from age 3, with under-3s restricted to private boats.
If you only read one page before booking, make it our Orlando activities by age guide, which sorts every option on this site by age, noise, heat, swimming and stroller use.
From June to September, most of Orlando’s rain arrives, much of it as afternoon storms, and airboat operators say animals hide in the midday heat. That is why the morning is for outdoor plans and the afternoon is for air-conditioning, and our guide to indoor and rainy-day activities in Orlando lists the best stops. The fall and winter months change the picture. October brings the start of the dry season, November is the driest month of the year with average highs near 78°F, and from mid-November the manatees move into the warm springs. Crystal River’s sanctuary season runs November 15 to March 31.
Two weeks are worth avoiding if you can: Thanksgiving week and the stretch from Christmas to New Year are the busiest of the season. Kennedy Space Center also closes on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Wildlife and airboats are the most “Florida” thing you can do with children. The rides near Kissimmee run through the lakes and creeks that form the headwaters of the Everglades system, which is why so many are sold as Everglades tours even though Everglades National Park is about four hours south. Our airboat tours with kids page compares ride lengths, ear protection and pickup options, and the Everglades page explains exactly where the boats go.
Animal parks are the easiest half day. Gatorland has shows through the day, a splash park and a petting farm (see our full Gatorland guide with ticket prices, show times and add-ons), and Wild Florida combines a wildlife park, a drive-through safari in your own car and its own airboats. Our top pick for a first taste of both, the Wild Florida airboat ride and wildlife park ticket, is the date picker further up this page, and our breakdown of that ticket covers ride lengths, ear protection and what the park ticket includes.
Kennedy Space Center rewards school-age children most, though Planet Play keeps younger siblings busy. The bus tour to the Saturn V is included with admission and takes about four hours round trip, so it shapes the whole day. The details are in Kennedy Space Center with kids, our guide to Kennedy Space Center ticket prices covers every ticket type, and families without a car can compare the trip with transport from Orlando.
Manatee season is the reason to visit in winter. Crystal River is where you can swim with them, Blue Spring is the closest of the three and has a boardwalk for watching them, and Silver Springs adds glass-bottom boats and kayaking. Our manatee tours from Orlando page compares all three for children who can and cannot swim, and the Crystal River viewing cruise is the dry option for toddlers and grandparents.
For little ones, LEGOLAND Florida and Peppa Pig Theme Park sit side by side in Winter Haven, with separate tickets. For prices, Fastrack and every ride by height, see our LEGOLAND Florida ticket and ride guide. For storm days, International Drive has SEA LIFE, WonderWorks, the Museum of Illusions and indoor skydiving, all compared on our indoor family activities page, and our SEA LIFE Orlando ticket guide covers the aquarium on its own.
The starting prices on this site are the listing prices shown on GetYourGuide. Parking, food and rentals come on top at most places, and for days that cost nothing our list of free things to do in Orlando with kids covers the parks, museum free days and Disney Springs. Kennedy Space Center charges $15 to park and rents strollers from $8, Gatorland does not allow outside food and rents strollers from $11, and ICON Park’s garage is free on its upper floors. Hotel-pickup tours cost more per person but take the parking, the driving and the navigation off your hands.
Every activity on this site links to a public GetYourGuide listing, and each tour page sets out what is included, what is not, the meeting point and the practical catches for families. We link to GetYourGuide to book and earn a commission when you do, at no extra cost to you. Cancellation terms vary by listing, so check them in the calendar before you pay.

"A great afternoon out and fantastic value for money"

"Loved our half hour airboat tour. Highly recommend."

"We had a brilliant time in the hour long airboat tour with Jeff. I am glad we went for the hour long tour as half an hour wouldn’t have felt long enough. We saw so many different birds, turtles and alligators. The wildlife park is also brilliant to walk aroun"

"Our family visited wild florida adventure park today, we booked an airboat ride which was fantastic, the guide was very informative and knew the spots where there were Gators, the park was amazing especially being able to get up close to the parks animals, would recommend a visit."

"We had a blast!!! captain Jeff was so funny and knowledgeable!!! We loved it and the grounds so many animals we saw more animals here than in any zoo!!!"

"Mike was very informative and a really nice person. The ride across the Everglades was fun and the wild life park was also really cool especially the feeling of the alligators"

"Jeff was our guide and he did a wonderful job. He knew where to find the alligators. He took us right to a mom and her babies and was able to point them out easily. The boat ride was smooth and loud but they provided ear protection for everyone including out toddler. The boat left on time and the views were lovely."

"This was our first airboat ride, and it did not disappoint! Our guide was very knowledgeable. We were able to see momma alligators and their babies, many different water birds, and even a few eagles. Even though the water was lower than in the spring, and it was hot and humid (September) it was a lot of fun."

A lot, and much of it is closer than people expect. Gatorland is 15 to 20 minutes from the Disney area, the Kissimmee airboat rides are nearby, Kennedy Space Center is about 50 miles east, LEGOLAND is about 45 minutes away in Winter Haven, and from mid-November the manatees gather in the springs north of the city. See our full list of things to do with kids besides Disney.
Pick something short, close and forgiving. Peppa Pig Theme Park is built for ages 2 to 5, SEA LIFE Orlando is indoors with a 360-degree tunnel, and Gatorland has a splash park, a petting farm and wide flat paths. A short airboat ride can work too if your toddler tolerates noise; Wild Florida provides ear protection for children and adults. Our by-age guide goes through each option.
The operators near Orlando set no minimum age, provide life jackets (required for small children, with the cut-off between ages 5 and 6 depending on the operator) and hand out ear protection. The real questions are noise and sun: none of the official sites promises child-sized ear defenders, so parents of toddlers often bring their own. More in our guide to airboat tours with kids.
Yes, with the right plan. Planet Play is an indoor, multi-level play area designed for ages 2 to 12 and is included with admission, and the bus tour to the Saturn V uses air-conditioned coaches. Some headline experiences have limits: the Shuttle Launch Experience needs 44 inches and the astronaut training simulators are for ages 10 and up. Read Kennedy Space Center with kids for a day plan.
Roughly mid-November to March, when manatees move into warm springs. Crystal River's manatee sanctuary season runs November 15 to March 31, and Blue Spring State Park, about 45 minutes from Orlando, closes its spring run to swimmers and paddlers during the season so the animals can gather. Sightings are never guaranteed. Compare the options in manatee tours from Orlando.
No. Swimming is only part of the Crystal River snorkel tours, and even there several operators take children from age 3 on group tours and some let a parent stay on the boat with a young child. Families who would rather stay dry can take a viewing cruise, walk the Blue Spring boardwalk or ride a glass-bottom boat at Silver Springs.
Look for listings that include hotel pickup. Kennedy Space Center trips with transport, full-day manatee snorkel trips, St. Augustine and Clearwater Beach day trips and some airboat tours all collect from Orlando-area hotels. Kennedy Space Center itself runs no transport from Orlando. See family day trips from Orlando.
Head for International Drive. SEA LIFE Orlando, WonderWorks (allow at least 3 to 4 hours), the Museum of Illusions and iFLY indoor skydiving (from age 3) are all indoors, and ICON Park's garage is free on floors 4 to 7. Our indoor family activities page compares them by age.
Gatorland is the easier half day: 15 to 20 minutes from the Disney area, shows through the day, a splash park, a petting farm and a zip line with no minimum age (riders must be at least 37 inches). Wild Florida is farther out, about 34 miles from Disney, and pairs its wildlife park with airboat rides and a drive-through safari in your own car. More on Wild Florida with kids.
November is hard to beat for outdoor days: it is Orlando's driest month, average highs drop to about 78°F, and hurricane season ends on November 30. Avoid Thanksgiving week and the Christmas to New Year week if you want quieter days, as those are the busiest weeks of the season.
Every price shown is the starting price GetYourGuide displays for that listing, with its basis next to it. Every tour this site covers is currently priced per person, and children's prices depend on the listing, so check the age bands in the booking calendar before you pay.
