The Short Answer
Kennedy Space Center is the easiest big day trip with kids: it is the closest, much of it is indoors, and hotel-pickup options take the driving off your hands. In winter, a manatee trip beats it for water-confident kids, and St. Augustine suits families who like history and walking.
About 10 hours door to door, with hotel pickup or a bus from ICON Park. Check whether your option includes admission.
Nov 15–Mar 31 is manatee season. It is an 11-hour day and sightings are never guaranteed.
Kids 15 and under get into the old Spanish fort free. It is about 12 hours, much of it walking in the sun.
Drop-off at Pier 60 and a pirate cruise option for younger kids. Expect about 2.5 hours each way.

The Experience
Real rockets, a launch simulator and an astronaut encounter, with someone else doing the driving.
What a 10- to 12-hour day out of Orlando looks like with kids.
Hotel pickup, a central bus stop or your own car. Pickup tours save you parking and the drive home when everyone is tired.
Snacks, water, a change of clothes and anything the kids need to sleep in the vehicle. Ask the operator about car seats.
Many trips give you about 5–7 hours on site. Do the big-ticket part first while the kids are fresh.

The Family Guide
Drive times, pickup versus car, and which long days young kids can really handle.
A day trip from Orlando is really two things: a few great hours somewhere new, and a lot of time in a vehicle getting there and back. With kids, the second part decides how the day goes. Before you pick a destination, look at the drive, the start time and whether your youngest can sleep on the way home.
Here is how far the main family day trips are, and which ones you can do without a car.
| Day trip | Each way from Orlando | Hotel-pickup tour? |
|---|---|---|
| Kennedy Space Center | About 55–70 min | Yes |
| LEGOLAND Florida | About 45 min | No, drive yourself |
| Blue Spring (manatees) | About 45 min | No, drive yourself |
| Silver Springs | About 1 hr 25 min | Yes |
| Crystal River (manatees) | About 1.5–2 hr | Yes |
| St. Augustine | About 1 hr 45 min–2 hr 30 min | Yes |
| Clearwater Beach | About 2 hr by car; the tour allows 2.5 hr | Yes |
With a car, you control the start time, the snack stops and when you leave. That matters most with toddlers. Pickup tours earn their price on the long runs, St. Augustine, Clearwater and Crystal River, where nobody wants to drive home after 10 hours out, and at Kennedy Space Center, where they also save the $15 parking.
Most pickup day trips run 10–12 hours. That is a big ask for a 3-year-old, and a missed nap in a hot parking lot can undo the best-planned day. If your youngest is under 5, the closer self-drive trips work better: LEGOLAND, Blue Spring or a half day at Wild Florida. For the longer trips, a child who sleeps well in a moving vehicle is the one who enjoys them.
Car seats vary by operator. The Silver Springs listing says children under 6 may need a booster seat, which the operator can rent, so ask your operator before you book any pickup tour.
Kennedy Space Center is the closest of the big day trips and has the most to do indoors. The Kennedy Space Center trip with transport runs about 10 hours and comes in several versions: transport only, transport plus an entry ticket, a small-group tour for up to 12 with hotel pickup, a breakfast bag and the KSC Explore bus tour, and an express bus from ICON Park. Check which one includes admission before you book.
At the complex, Planet Play keeps ages 2–12 busy, and the Shuttle Launch Experience needs 44 inches. Child admission covers ages 3–11, and under-3s are free. The complex is closed on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026, and on Christmas Day, and admission is not available on some launch dates. If you want a smaller group, the Kennedy Space Center small-group tour from Orlando caps it at 14 guests with about 7 hours at the complex. Our Kennedy Space Center with kids guide has a full plan for the day.
From November 15 to March 31 the manatees gather in warm springs north and west of Orlando. The manatee snorkel tour with lunch and hotel pickup takes you to Crystal River, where the state wildlife agency describes Kings Bay as the only area in Florida where swimmers are monitored around manatees. Anyone who would rather not swim can stay on the boat. The afternoon adds Homosassa Springs, with an underwater viewing room. It is an 11-hour day, the wetsuit costs extra on site, and the tour does not run on Christmas Day.
Manatees are wild, so no tour can promise a sighting. The spring water is about 72°F, but January mornings in Crystal River average lows in the low 40s, so pack warm layers and towels for the ride back.
The Silver Springs small-group day trip is the dry option. Nobody swims at Silver Springs, and the famous glass-bottom boats, invented there, give kids a view straight down into the springs. Manatees at Silver Springs number in the dozens over a season, not hundreds, and the park’s wild monkeys must never be fed. Our manatee tours from Orlando page compares every option.
St. Augustine, founded in 1565, gives kids a real stone fort, cannons and narrow old streets. At Castillo de San Marcos, children 15 and under get in free with an adult, while adults pay $15, by card only. The St. Augustine day trip with hotel pickup runs about 12 hours and lets you add a bay cruise, the hop-on hop-off trolley, a living-history museum or the Pirate & Treasure Museum, which is fully indoors and air-conditioned.
Much of the day is walking outdoors in the sun, and travelers report the coach drops off near the trolley depot, a walk from the old town. With kids, the trolley option makes sense. The tour must be booked at least 2 days ahead. From November 21, 2026 to January 18, 2027, Nights of Lights fills the historic district with white lights, free to see. The lights come on after dark, so check the return time or drive yourself. Read our St. Augustine breakdown for the options.
The Clearwater Beach day trip with options drops you at Pier 60 with no parking to find. You can add a marine aquarium, a dolphin-watching boat, deep-sea fishing, or a pirate cruise with treasure hunts, face painting and water-gun games, which is the one younger kids will talk about. The listing allows about 2.5 hours each way, and towels and sunscreen are on you. Dolphins are wild, so sightings are not guaranteed.
The Kennedy Space Center and airboat full-day tour packs two big things into one day. It suits older kids with stamina more than preschoolers.
Book the Kennedy Space Center trip if you have no car, your kids are about 5 or older, and you want the most day for the least travel. Pick the manatee snorkel if you are here between November and March and your kids are happy in the water. Pick St. Augustine for history-loving kids who can walk, and Clearwater for a beach day. If your kids are younger, stay closer: our Orlando beyond Disney hub, LEGOLAND Florida with kids and guide to choosing by age have shorter days.

For most families it is Kennedy Space Center. It is the closest of the big day trips, about 55–70 minutes each way, much of it is indoors, and there are tours with hotel pickup if you have no car. In winter, a Crystal River manatee trip is the one water-confident kids remember, and St. Augustine suits history lovers. Kennedy Space Center with kids.
Yes. Kennedy Space Center, St. Augustine, Clearwater Beach, Silver Springs and the Crystal River manatees all have tours with pickup from Orlando hotels or a central meeting point. They take the long drive home off your hands, which matters after a 10- to 12-hour day. LEGOLAND and Blue Spring are easier by car, since the tours on this page do not cover them.
They can be hard. Most pickup day trips run 10–12 hours, and a toddler who misses a nap in a hot parking lot can undo the day. If your youngest is under 5, pick closer self-drive options such as LEGOLAND or Blue Spring, both about 45 minutes away, or save the long trips for children who sleep well in a moving vehicle. Ask each operator about car seats before you book.
The Visitor Complex is about 50 miles from Orlando, roughly 55–70 minutes each way from International Drive or the Disney area. Parking is $15 per car. The trip with transport takes about 10 hours door to door and includes pickup or a bus from ICON Park, depending on the option you choose. Check whether your option includes the admission ticket.
St. Augustine is about 105 miles away, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes each way depending on traffic. The day trip with hotel pickup runs about 12 hours, much of it walking in the sun, so the trolley option helps with younger kids. Children 15 and under get into Castillo de San Marcos free with an adult. Our St. Augustine breakdown.
Nights of Lights 2026–27 runs from November 21, 2026 to January 18, 2027. It opens with Light-Up! Night on November 21, with the lighting ceremony at 6:30 PM in the Plaza de la Constitución. Seeing the lights is free and needs no ticket. They come on after dark, so if you book a day tour, check the return time, or drive yourself and stay for the evening.
Manatee season at Crystal River runs November 15 to March 31, when the warm springs draw them in from colder water, and numbers peak from December to February. Manatees are wild, so no tour can guarantee a sighting, and in summer they spread out and are harder to find. Compare manatee tours from Orlando.
No. On the manatee snorkel tour with hotel pickup, anyone who would rather not swim can stay on the boat and watch from above. Mask, snorkel and fins are included, and wetsuits cost extra at the dive shop. The spring water is about 72°F, but winter mornings can be in the 40s, so bring a towel, warm layers and a change of clothes for the ride back.
Yes, since nobody swims there. Swimming is not permitted at Silver Springs, and the glass-bottom boats, invented at this spring, let kids look straight down into the water. The small-group trip includes park admission, with the boat ride as an option. The listing says it is not suitable for wheelchair users, and the park's wild monkeys must never be fed. Our breakdown.
It works if your kids want a real Gulf beach and you do not want to drive. The coach drops you at Pier 60, and you can add a pirate cruise with treasure hunts, face painting and water-gun games, a marine aquarium or a dolphin-watching boat. The listing allows about 2.5 hours each way, and towels and sunscreen are not included. Our Clearwater breakdown.
Kennedy Space Center, for most 7-year-olds. It is closer, much of it is indoors, and Planet Play, the Rocket Garden and the Shuttle Launch Experience, which needs 44 inches, are built for that age. St. Augustine rewards kids who enjoy history and walking, and the fort and Pirate & Treasure Museum help. On a hot day, KSC is the easier call.
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is closed on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026, and on Christmas Day, and admission is not available on some launch dates. The Crystal River manatee tour with hotel pickup does not run on some holidays, including Christmas Day. Book your date early for Thanksgiving week and the Christmas to New Year stretch, when Orlando is at its busiest.
