Family Guide
Manatee Tours From Orlando: A Parent's Guide
Which spring, which age, whether your kids need to swim, and how to handle cold winter mornings.
Start with one question: will your kids get in the water?
Every manatee trip from Orlando comes down to one choice. Crystal River is where families swim and snorkel near wild manatees, and Florida’s wildlife agency describes the Crystal River and Kings Bay area as the only area in Florida where swimmers are monitored around manatees. Blue Spring and Silver Springs are look-but-don’t-swim places, where you watch from a boardwalk, a boat or a kayak.
A 3-year-old usually gets the most from a boardwalk or a boat, where they can point and shout. A 7-year-old who is happy in the water can float beside a manatee in a wetsuit, and that tends to be the story they tell at school. A 14-year-old may enjoy the kayak routes most, paddling their own boat and looking for alligators, turtles and monkeys as well as manatees.
Season matters more than anything. Manatees crowd into warm springs from mid-November to March, when rivers and the Gulf cool well below the 72°F spring water. Outside those months sightings drop, and even in peak season nobody can promise one: these are wild animals.
Crystal River vs Blue Spring vs Silver Springs
| Crystal River | Blue Spring | Silver Springs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive from Orlando | About 1.5–2 hours | About 45 minutes | About 1–1.5 hours |
| Swim near manatees | Yes, on guided tours | No | No swimming at all |
| Winter manatees | 600+ in Kings Bay | Hundreds on cold days | Dozens over a season |
| How you see them | Snorkel or boat | Boardwalk, river cruise, kayak | Clear kayak, glass-bottom boat |
| Youngest kids | Group swims from age 3 | Boardwalk for any age | Glass-bottom boat |
| Without a car | Hotel-pickup day tours | Self-drive | Small-group day trip |
Choose Crystal River if swimming or snorkeling is the whole point. It is the longest drive, but it is also where group tours put you in the water. The Crystal River manatee snorkel with lunch and hotel pickup handles the driving, while the Crystal River manatee swim group tour suits families with a car.
Choose Blue Spring for the biggest winter crowds of manatees on the shortest drive. The park set a record of 932 manatees in January 2024, and a half-mile accessible boardwalk runs along the spring run, which makes it the easiest option with a stroller. The spring run is closed to swimming and paddling from mid-November to March, so kayaks stay on the St. Johns River. Since July 2026 every day-use visitor has needed an online reservation from Florida State Parks, and the park regularly fills up, so check the current rule before you go. The small-group manatee and wildlife kayak tour launches from French Landing nearby, and the Blue Spring St. Johns River cruise is a dry alternative for younger kids.
Choose Silver Springs for kayaking with a wider cast of wildlife. No swimming is allowed, but the glass-bottom boats were invented here, and the Silver Springs manatees and monkeys clear kayak tour lets kids look straight down through the hull. Manatee numbers are far lower than at Blue Spring or Crystal River. The park’s wild rhesus monkeys can carry herpes B, and feeding them is illegal, so keep children well back.
Minimum ages, swimming ability and wetsuits
For group swims at Crystal River, the common rule is age 3 and up. Fun 2 Dive and River Ventures both send families with children under 3 to private tours, and the swim group tour on this page says the same. Some operators set no hard minimum but note that children usually start to enjoy it around age 6 to 8. Rules vary by operator, so always check the specific listing before you book.
Age matters less than comfort in the water. Kids need to float calmly, follow the guide and stay quiet around resting manatees. Operators disagree on non-swimmers: some ask that every participant can swim, while others welcome non-swimmers with float noodles and a wetsuit for buoyancy. Touching, chasing or diving onto manatees is prohibited, which is a rule worth practicing with an excited 5-year-old in the pool the night before.
Wetsuits are part of most swim tours. The swim group tour includes a wetsuit and snorkel gear, while the hotel-pickup day trip charges a small wetsuit rental at the dive shop. Anyone who would rather not swim can stay on the boat: the day trip allows it, and some operators ask observers to book a seat.
Cold water, cold air and early starts
The springs hold about 72°F all year, which feels warm when you first slide in. After an hour or two of floating, children get cold, even in a wetsuit. The harder moment is climbing out: January lows around Crystal River average about 43°F, so a wet child meets air that is far colder than the water.
Pack a big towel, a hat, warm layers, a dry change of clothes and a snack for every child. Most operators recommend early tours, often starting between 6 and 8 AM, when crowds are thinner and the water tends to be clearer. From the Disney area, that means leaving between about 4:30 and 6 AM for a self-drive swim. On the very coldest days, Three Sisters Springs can close to swimmers.
Hotel pickup or self-drive
The hotel-pickup snorkel day is the easiest option without a car. You are collected in Orlando, Kissimmee, Lake Buena Vista or the Disney area, and the day adds lunch and Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, where an underwater observatory lets non-swimmers see manatees too (it needs stairs). The catch is length: about 11 hours, which is a lot for a preschooler. Read our breakdown of the snorkel day trip for the full itinerary.
For Silver Springs without a car, the Silver Springs small-group manatee season day trip includes transport from Orlando and park admission, with up to five hours to explore. Kayaks and the glass-bottom boat cost extra unless you pick that option, and children under 6 may need a booster seat, so tell the operator when you book.
Self-driving gives you control over naps and snacks. Blue Spring is the shortest trip, about 45 minutes each way. Note that the French Landing meeting point for the kayak tour has no restrooms, so stop at Valentine Park about a mile before.
When to go and what to expect
Plan your trip between mid-November and March. Crystal River’s numbers peak from December to February, Silver Springs peaks from November through February, and Blue Spring’s manatees crowd in on the coldest mornings, then drift out as the river warms in late March. Weekday mornings are quieter everywhere.
Even on a good day, how many manatees you see and how clear the water is can change by the hour. Our family day trips from Orlando guide has other full-day ideas if the weather turns, and the airboat guide covers a shorter wildlife outing close to the parks.
Book this if, pick something else if
Book the Crystal River snorkel with hotel pickup if your kids are about 6 or older, comfortable in the water and fine with a long day, and you would rather not drive at dawn. Book the Crystal River manatee viewing cruise if you want Kings Bay without anyone getting wet.
Pick something else if you have a baby or a toddler under 3: a Blue Spring boardwalk morning, or Gatorland close to the parks, will be kinder to everyone. Still weighing it up by age? The by-age chooser and our list of things to do in Orlando besides Disney can help.

What Families Say About the Manatee Day Trip
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"This is an amazing day out and FANTASTIC value for money. We went snorkling, to a state park and on an airboat ride. The whole day was maybe 12 hours or so out and about so it’s fab value for money. There is a lunch provided that looked great but sadly wasn’t able to accommodate my dietary needs so if you’ve allergies pack snacks just in case! Other than that, it was truly amazing. Tour Guide Adam is so delightful and entertaining. Thanks Adam for a wonderful and memorable day out in Florida"

"All good. Comfy transport, nice people and experience. Just still waiting for fotos from the manatee’s tour"
"We had an amazing time! I had my kids with me, and everywhere we went was perfect for them as well. Would definitely do again. January was a great time to come, we saw a ton of manatees and several alligators as well."
"Absolutely fantastic, better than expected, our tour guide was phenomenal he made us laugh the whole time and being able to swim and interact with manatee was such a unique experience that we will never forget, thanks again !!! 😁"

"We had a great day out! Our tour guide Mike was excellent. We saw a manatee, lunch was nice, saw lots of animals in the state park and the highlight of the trip was a visit to wild bills for an airboat tour! The only thing I would say though is that it was disappointing to be taken there and told it was included but then we had to pay when we got there. I’m so glad I did it though! Held a gator, saw gators and got to see some of the real Florida! Thank you"
"We really had a dreamlike day. We experienced the real Florida that our guide described on the way. The organisation was carried out exactly as planned from start to finish, without any problems. It was one of my best days."
"An awesome experience, with super nice guides, small snacks, and good equipment. We saw a lot of manatees, even with calves, and didn't even have to wait or look for them for long. What a great day!"

Check Availability & BookManatee Tours With Kids: Parents' Questions
Ages, swimming, cold water and which spring to choose, answered before you book.
Not always. At Crystal River, operators set their own rules: some ask that every participant can swim, while others accept non-swimmers who float with a noodle and a buoyant wetsuit. Most tours also let a child stay on the boat and watch. At Blue Spring and Silver Springs nobody swims at all, so you see manatees from a boardwalk, a boat or a kayak. Check the specific listing before you book.
On group swim tours the usual minimum is 3. Fun 2 Dive and River Ventures both require families with children under 3 to book a private tour, and the swim group tour on this page has the same rule. Other operators set no hard minimum but say children typically start to succeed around age 6 to 8. Rules differ by company, so always check the listing you plan to book.
Yes, but usually not in the water. Children under 3 cannot join most public Crystal River swims or the viewing cruise on this page. The easiest toddler option is the half-mile accessible boardwalk at Blue Spring State Park, about 45 minutes from Orlando, where winter manatees gather in the spring run. It works with a stroller, and you can leave the moment someone needs a nap.
The springs stay around 72°F all year, which feels mild at first but cools children down after an hour or two of floating. Operators provide wetsuits for warmth and buoyancy. The real chill comes when you climb out: January mornings near Crystal River average lows of about 43°F. Pack towels, a hat, warm layers and dry clothes for every child, and keep a snack ready for the boat.
Plan on mid-November to March. The Crystal River refuge's manatee season runs November 15 to March 31, and numbers there peak between December and February. Blue Spring fills up on the coldest mornings and empties as the river warms in late March. Silver Springs sightings peak from November through February. Sightings are never guaranteed, even in peak season, because manatees are wild.
Pick Crystal River if your kids want to swim or snorkel, since it is the only one of the three where group tours put you in the water. Pick Blue Spring for the shortest drive and big winter crowds of manatees seen from a boardwalk or a kayak on the St. Johns River. Pick Silver Springs for clear kayaks, glass-bottom boats and wildlife such as turtles and monkeys, with far fewer manatees.
Roughly 85 to 95 miles, or about 1.5 to 2 hours by car, via Florida's Turnpike, I-75 and SR-44. Most swim tours start early, often between 6 and 8 AM, so families staying near Disney usually leave between 4:30 and 6 AM. If that sounds brutal with kids, the hotel-pickup snorkel day does the driving, though it runs about 11 hours door to door.
No. Swimming or diving with manatees is not permitted at Blue Spring, and the spring and spring run close to all water activity from mid-November until about March. You watch from the boardwalk, join a St. Johns River cruise, or kayak on the river outside the spring run. Since July 2026 day-use visitors have needed an online reservation, so check the current rule before you go.
No. Manatees are wild, and every operator and park says sightings vary from day to day. Winter mornings give the best odds, especially at Crystal River and Blue Spring, but water clarity and the number of animals can change by the hour. One Crystal River operator sells a paid refund-if-no-manatee upgrade, but most operators simply ask you to book early in the day and early in your trip, leaving room for a second try.
No. Federal rules at Crystal River ask for passive observation, which means floating calmly at the surface and letting the manatees come to you. Touching, chasing, poking, riding or diving onto manatees is prohibited, as is separating a mother from her calf. Talk your kids through this before the trip, because an excited 6-year-old reaching out is the most common mistake.
It suits school-age kids and teens who can sit still in a kayak for two hours. The clear kayak lets them look down into the water for fish, turtles and sometimes manatees, and the park is known for its wild rhesus monkeys, which must never be fed or approached. Children may ride with an adult, and the operator asks you to get in touch first if you bring a small child.
Yes. The Crystal River snorkel day picks you up in the Disney, Kissimmee or Orlando area and adds lunch and Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. A small-group day trip also runs from Orlando to Silver Springs with park admission included. Both are full days. Our breakdown of the snorkel day trip covers the itinerary.
