About This Experience

The day starts early with a pickup from the Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, International Drive or Kissimmee area, then roughly an hour and a half to two hours on the road to Crystal River. There you board a pontoon boat with a captain and a certified dive master and head out into Kings Bay, where manatees gather around the warm springs. If manatees are found, you slip into the water with a mask and snorkel and float quietly at the surface while they drift past.

After the swim comes lunch (the listing includes a box lunch with a drink) and an afternoon at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Kids who stayed on the boat get their turn here: the park's floating underwater observatory lets you look manatees in the eye through glass, and the paths pass Florida animals such as panthers and birds of prey. Some reviewers also describe an airboat stop on the way home that was paid separately on the day.

The trade-offs are real. It is a long day of around 11 hours, the swim happens in the cool early part of the day, and in winter the air can be 25 to 30 degrees colder than the 72°F spring water, so climbing back onto the boat is the chilly moment. Wetsuits are not in the price and are rented at the dive shop. Manatees are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed, and summer trips usually find far fewer of them than December to February.

This suits families with school-age kids who are happy in open water and can stay calm and quiet around large animals. If you have a toddler, a child who panics in deep water, or a family that falls apart without a nap, a shorter viewing cruise in Crystal River or a Blue Spring kayak trip closer to Orlando will be kinder to everyone.

Good to Know & Caveats

  • Manatees are wild, so sightings are never guaranteed. Numbers peak from about December to February and drop in summer.
  • The listing gives no minimum age. Crystal River operators generally restrict children under 3 to private tours, so check with the operator before booking for a young child.
  • Wetsuits cost extra at the dive shop. In winter the water is about 72°F while early-morning air can sit in the 40s, so a suit matters for kids.
  • Guests may stay on the boat and watch instead of swimming.
  • The listing both includes a box lunch and mentions lunch at your own expense, so check what your booking covers.
  • Confirm your pickup place and time at least 48 hours ahead. Tours do not run on some holidays, including Christmas Day.
  • The Homosassa observatory is reached by stairs. The park lends free strollers and wheelchairs.
  • Touching, chasing or feeding manatees is against the rules; guides brief everyone on passive observation.
  • The listing names fins, but at least one Crystal River operator says U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rules do not allow swim fins with manatees, so expect to float in your wetsuit.

Meeting Point

Hotel pickup is included from select hotels in the Disney, Lake Buena Vista, Kissimmee, Universal, SeaWorld and International Drive areas. You confirm your pickup address at checkout, and drop-off is at the same place.

A great day, even with the rain. With the help of Adam our guide I enjoyed this experience a lot!

This is an amazing day out and FANTASTIC value for money. We went snorkling, to a state park and on an airboat ride. The whole day was maybe 12 hours or so out and about so it’s fab value for money. There is a lunch provided that looked great but sadly wasn’t able to accommodate my dietary needs so if you’ve allergies pack snacks just in case! Other than that, it was truly amazing. Tour Guide Adam is so delightful and entertaining. Thanks Adam for a wonderful and memorable day out in Florida

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this trip go to Crystal River or Homosassa?

Both. The manatee swim is in Crystal River's Kings Bay, and the afternoon is spent at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, where you see manatees again from an underwater observatory.

How early do we leave Orlando?

Early. Pickup times are confirmed 48 hours before, and one reviewer staying near Universal was collected at 6:45 AM. Plan on being back in the evening after about 11 hours.

Do my kids have to swim?

No. Anyone who prefers to stay dry can watch from the pontoon boat, and Homosassa lets everyone see manatees through glass. Kids who do get in float at the surface in a wetsuit, and they need to stay calm and follow the dive master.

Is it too cold in winter?

The spring water stays around 72°F, but January mornings in the area average lows in the low 40s. Rent the wetsuit, pack a warm layer and a dry change of clothes, and the cold moment is short.

Are we guaranteed to see manatees?

No. They are wild animals and the listing says sightings are not guaranteed. Your odds are highest in the cold months, roughly December to February.
