About This Experience

You drive yourself to Wild Florida, a privately owned airboat dock and animal park on Lake Cypress, south-east of Kissimmee. The ride comes first: 30 minutes by default, or an hour if you book the longer option. The captain hands out ear defenders, then runs the boat across open lake, marsh grass and narrow channels, cutting the engine near nests and basking spots so everyone can look and take photos.

After the boat you have the park to yourselves for as long as you like. It is a walk-around mix of Florida and exotic animals: alligators large and small, zebras, deer, tortoises, sloths and birds, with a hands-on alligator demonstration at set times. Kids who got restless on the boat usually perk up here, and there is a covered playground and misters for the hotter hours.

The name needs a word of explanation. The operator calls these wetlands the Central Florida Everglades because Lake Cypress sits in the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, the headwaters that eventually drain toward Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades. You are not in Everglades National Park, which is roughly four hours south; you are at the top of the same water system, and the wildlife is much the same.

The trade-offs are distance, noise and sun. It is about 34 miles from the Disney area and the last stretch is rural, so rideshares back can be hard to find. The boats are loud and open, and wild gators are likely but never promised. If your kids hate loud noises, or you have no car and a tight schedule, a Kissimmee airboat closer to town or a hotel-pickup tour is easier.

Loved our half hour airboat tour. Highly recommend.

We had a brilliant time in the hour long airboat tour with Jeff. I am glad we went for the hour long tour as half an hour wouldn’t have felt long enough. We saw so many different birds, turtles and alligators. The wildlife park is also brilliant to walk aroun

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the airboat too loud for a toddler?

It is loud, which is why Wild Florida gives headphones to children and adults. Some toddlers fall asleep, others hate it. If your child is under three, bring your own snug child ear muffs and pick the 30-minute ride.

Is this the real Everglades?

It is the headwaters of the Everglades system, not Everglades National Park. Lake Cypress is part of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, which drains south toward Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades. The national park is about four hours' drive further south.

Should we book 30 minutes or an hour?

For kids under six, 30 minutes is usually plenty on a loud, sunny boat. Older kids and wildlife fans get more stops at nests and birds on the hour ride. Park entry and the gator demonstration are the same either way.

How early do we need to leave Orlando?

Allow 45 minutes to an hour from the Disney or Kissimmee area, then arrive 45 minutes before your ride to check in. For a 9 AM ride that means leaving around 7:30.

Will we definitely see alligators?

Not in the wild; the operator says its tours are fully wild and nothing is guaranteed. Most rides do spot some, especially in cooler months. You will certainly see gators in the park afterwards.
