Orlando: Small-Group Manatee & Wildlife Kayak Tour

About This Experience
You drive to French Landing, a public boat ramp at the end of a dirt road just past the Blue Spring State Park entrance in Orange City. After a 10-minute safety briefing, a naturalist guide leads a group of no more than 10 out on stable sit-on-top kayaks for about two hours on the water around the park.
The pace is slow and the paddling is easy, with plenty of floating and looking. In the cooler months manatees gather near Blue Spring's warm run and often surface right beside the kayaks, which is the moment kids remember. Along the way guides point out alligators sunning on the banks, turtles, herons, ospreys and sometimes river otters, and several reviewers describe manatees showing up even outside the main season.
The trade-offs are simple. You need a car, and there are no restrooms at the launch; the nearest are at Valentine Park, about a mile before you arrive. Tours go out rain or shine unless the weather turns unsafe, so a cold, windy January morning can feel raw on the water. Manatees are wild and sightings are never guaranteed, although your odds are much higher in winter.
This is a strong choice for families who want real wildlife without a full-day drive, and for kids old enough to sit in a kayak for two hours without wriggling overboard. The listing gives no minimum age, so check with the operator before booking for young children. Toddlers, nappers and anyone uneasy about sitting low on the water near alligators may be happier on the boardwalk inside the park.

What Travelers Say

Our group had an AWESOME time with TJ- I was sad that I didn't go with the group because they all came back racing about how great of a tour they had! He showed them Manatees, Alligators, Turtles, tons of fish and birds, and lots of other wildlife! The group loved TJ as a guide, and they said he was funny, extremely knowledgeable, and super friendly. We unfortunately showed up very late (our GPS got us lost, not the company's fault- their directions were spot on) and TJ was kind enough to wait for us as well. I really wish I had joined this tour myself, as our group told me it was their favorite thing we did in our entire Florida trip (and we went to ALL the theme parks and water parks!) BOOK THIS (and if you can, request TJ!)

Great fun and peaceful on the water. TJ was a great guide, very knowledgable and friendly. We were lucky enough to see manatees even out of a season, as well as turtles, a load of different birds and fish, as well as an alligator. Would definitely recommend.

Our guide TJ was great and very knowledgeable. We saw manatees playing and they came all the way up to the boat! We spent some time watching them play but also saw other wildlife, including herons with babies, multiple alligators, bald eagles, a water snake, turtles, and several other big (noisy) birds. The tour was good for both seasoned kayakers and beginners!

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is it from Orlando?
The launch sits beside Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, about 45 minutes from Orlando. That makes it one of the closer manatee outings for families staying near the parks.
Can kids paddle their own kayak?
The tour is built for beginners and the pace is gentle, but the listing does not state a minimum age or say whether children can share an adult's kayak. Ask the operator before booking if your kids are young.
Will we see manatees in the summer?
Maybe. Several reviewers saw manatees outside the main season, but the big gatherings happen in winter when manatees shelter in the spring's warm water. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Is there a bathroom at the launch?
No. Stop at Valentine Park, about a mile before French Landing, on the way in.
Do we need a Blue Spring State Park reservation?
The tour meets outside the park, and the directions tell you not to enter it. If you plan to visit the park's boardwalk afterward, check the park's own entry rules before you go.
